MUKAH, Oct. 2: Ukah needs to explore new areas of economics that potentially benefit society and generate income sources as the global economic landscape shifts.
Sarawak's Prime Minister, His Highness Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, said global economic change, including the issue of climate change and carbon emissions, opens up new opportunities that can be explored.
He said Mukah has advantages in terms of forest areas, peatlands, marshes and coastlines which could potentially contribute to carbon-related economic development.
"There's a new economic activity in the world that is impacting the part of Mukah. The world today has a climate problem, which is climate change caused by carbon emissions.
"These changes will have an economic impact on those of us who still have trees and peatlands. In Mukah, there is a lot of marshland and coastal area for about 200 kilometers", he said while addressing the Dinner Meeting with the Mukah Community, here tonight.
Brother Johari said that among the areas to be explored is the carbon economy, taking into account the capacity of the bog and peatlands in Mukah to store carbon.
He said the economic development also opens up opportunities through carbon trade which allows carbon storage efforts to be given economic value.
"Today there is what's called the carbon trade. We're the ones who save carbon, there are those who pay for our efforts to save carbon.
"We don't wait, instead we become pioneers of new technology", he said.
