ADVERTISE HERE

KUCHING, Jan 18: As many as 10 large black plastic bags of rubbish were retrieved from the storm and monsoon drains at Jalan Kwong Lee Bank today, prompting Kuching South City Council (MBKS) to appeal to citizens to dispose of their waste responsibly as accumulated debris poses a significant threat when it obstructs drains which then leads to flash flooding.
The area has experienced two consecutive days of flash flooding due to continuous downpours.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng expressed his dismay as despite drain clearing works from time to time by the council, additional rubbish continues to accumulate, blocking outlets and impeding water flow which contributes to the recurring flash floods.
“We clear the rubbish, and then people dispose of more. There are even tyres, chairs, and rubbish bins found inside the drains. This behaviour is highly irresponsible.
“If we want Sarawak to progress and advance, it is crucial that we embrace basic civic manners in keeping our city clean. Put the rubbish where they belong – the rubbish bin, which every household and shop has at least one,” he told DayakDaily when contacted today.
As the drains are currently filled with a high level of water, Wee said workers have to wait for the water to subside before they can inspect the drain tunnel.
“I often said that this city is our city and every single resident has the shared responsibility to play their part to keep the city clean,” he stressed.
Wee also urged elected representatives not to merely criticise the council but to consider the origin of the rubbish and condemn those who dispose of waste indiscriminately.
“Don’t solely blame the council. Are they inadvertently promoting littering by the public?” he questioned.
He also encouraged the public to report instances of illegal or indiscriminate dumping by submitting photos to the council as evidence.
“Offenders, if identified, would face a penalty of RM2,000. The public should report any instances of irresponsible dumping so that the council can immediately take appropriate action against the offenders,” he said. — DayakDaily
