KUCHING: Uncovered drains and a leaking roof at SJK Bintawa have been flagged for action following a joint school safety audit.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said potential hazards must be addressed before accidents happen, with particular attention to children with special educational needs.

“Parents should feel assured that their children are safe at school. Whether it is an uncovered drain or a leaking roof, we must take these concerns seriously and work together to address them,” he said in a statement today.

Wee joined MBKS officers and school representatives for the audit, which identified the need to install covers over the scupper drain along the school compound and repair the leaking roof.

The school also caters to students under the Special Education Integration Programme (PPKI), whose safety and accessibility needs were among the priorities assessed.

Wee said improvements must take these students’ needs into account so that every child could move around the school safely and comfortably.

The audit forms part of MBKS’s Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) Action Plan 2026-2028, which includes school safety audits and infrastructure improvements to protect children.

MBKS will follow up with the school and relevant parties to coordinate the necessary action.
