KUCHING, Oct 16: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has secured its third consecutive ASEAN Clean Tourist City recognition, extending its national-level achievement through 2028 and reinforcing the importance of cleanliness in sustaining Kuching’s tourism appeal.

The recognition, awarded under the ASEAN Clean Tourist City Standard by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC), is valid for three years from 2026 to 2028.

MBKS first received the recognition for the term 2022 to 2024, followed by a second term for 2024 to 2026.

The latest recognition reflects the council’s continued efforts to maintain a clean and welcoming urban environment for residents and visitors.

It also complements Kuching’s UNESCO City of Gastronomy designation, as clean public spaces, markets, and dining areas contribute to visitors’ overall experience of the city’s food culture while supporting local food businesses and tourism.

While thanking residents, businesses, community organisations, and council staff for their contributions, MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng also emphasised that maintaining the city’s cleanliness requires collective responsibility, including proper waste disposal, responsible use of public facilities, and care for shared spaces.

MBKS also reassured the public that it will continue to improve cleanliness and public amenities while encouraging greater community participation to maintain the city’s standards and strengthen Kuching’s appeal as a tourism and gastronomy destination. — DayakDaily
