KUCHING (Feb 25): Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is monitoring safety and infrastructure issues at Jalan Selangan Batu.

Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said he has been monitoring the situation in the neighbourhood.

“I’ve been here a few times looking into all the issues and problems to see how we’re going to deal with this community.

“So far, there are no serious land-related issues or broader negative impact,” he told reporters after a community lunch gathering at the neighbourhood’s Nine Emperor Gods Temple.

However, he acknowledged that the narrow roads in the area are a challenge for emergency response.

“Looking at the road, if anything happens, the fire truck will not be able to come in, except the ambulance.

“So, these are the issues that have been raised for quite a while,” he said.

He noted that the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) has inspected the area and found water pressure to be a bit low.

“We will request officially from the water board (Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd) to increase the water pressure. That is a precaution for emergencies,” he said.

He added MBKS is reviewing the placement of fire distribution points so they can be easily accessed during emergencies and will also enhance fire safety awareness among residents.

To improve visibility, more than 10 LED lights have also been installed in the area.

Wee said the council’s approach involves on-the-ground engagement across different areas.

“We try to assist from area to area — starting from Padungan, we go to Bintawa, then Kenyalang. That is the way I handle things.

“Even though I might not be there, I will always be able to get a report and look into the basic issues that we need to solve,” he said.

He also encouraged former residents to give back to their communities, citing similar efforts in Bintawa.

“In Bintawa area, the roundabout, we are getting those from Bintawa before who are successful to contribute back to beautify the area. This is what we want to see,” he said.

Wee stressed that development in the city requires collaboration between the authorities and public.

“We want people to feel that this city is not the government alone, per se, but it is everyone’s contribution, the engagement of everybody and respecting each other’s ideas and opinions. Then the city can move forward,” he added.

Among those present were Padawan Municipal Council chairman Tan Kai and Kho Teck Wan – a political secretary to the Premier.
