MIRI, 2 Oct: A total of 14 complaints were received by the Miri Municipal Council (MBM) during the Meeting of People session held today.

Miri's mayor, Adam Yii Siew Sang said that out of the total, 10 complaints related to the Engineering Department, three related to hygiene and public maintenance, while one related to landscape.

According to him, the session is among the channels provided by MBM to enable people to submit complaints, comments and recommendations directly to local authorities.

"This is one of the channels for the public to communicate with the council and we do it once a month.

"The important thing is, we're proactively approaching the public. Not only did we wait for them to come to us, but we also went down to them", he said when met at the Meeting of the People session on Old Man's Street, here today.

Among the complaints received were problems with dirty and clogged slides, collapsed slides, lack of manhole coverage, need to upgrade slide capacity as well as field area maintenance.

Adam said the issue of low-capacity slopes was also a common problem in older residential areas following an increase in development that led to increased water flow.

"Due to more development, the water supply is also increasing and the size and capacity of the previously built slopes are no longer sufficient", he said.

In the meantime, some other complaints involve wild dogs, waste disposal, trash can needs, tree pruning and malfunctioning street lights.

Adam said that any complaint received should not be resolved immediately because the council must assess priorities before further action is taken.

"The council must decide which is more critical to take action first.

"After priorities are set, the next step is to prepare allocations and design before work can be done", he said. - TVS
