KOTA KINABALU (April 8): The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has opened 36 investigation papers over the spread of false information on social media and digital platforms linked to the global energy crisis.
MCMC said 22 individuals from various locations nationwide have been called in to have their statements recorded to assist ongoing investigations.
Six investigation papers have so far been referred to the deputy public prosecutor for further review and possible action.
“MCMC is conducting investigations under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000, or imprisonment of up to two years, or both upon conviction,” the commission said in a statement.
The commission stressed that it views seriously any misuse of social media and digital platforms intended to mislead the public through the dissemination of unverified information.
It added that firm action will be taken against any individual found to have violated existing laws.
MCMC reminded the public to exercise responsibility when using communication platforms and to refrain from uploading or sharing content that could undermine social harmony and public order.
