KUCHING, May 23: The dual-carriageway project from Kemena Bridge to Bintulu Airport is ahead of schedule and is slated for completion by Oct 8, 2027.
In a project fact sheet issued by the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR), the RM69.94 million project has achieved physical progress of 15.34 per cent as of April 2026, compared to the scheduled 12.42 per cent.
The project is expected to shorten travel time from Bintulu Town to Bintulu Airport and Bintulu Town to Tatau and Sibu, as well as reduce traffic congestion.
The scope of work for the project includes:
- Construction of a 4.1 km, four-lane dual carriageway (JKR U5 Standard) connecting from Jepak Roundabout to Bintulu Airport Roundabout
- Two P–turns
- A 95-metre bridge
- A connecting road from Bintulu Airport to Bintulu Town
- Upgrading of the Bintulu Airport roundabout
Site possession took place on May 5, 2025, and the project was initially slated for completion on May 4, 2027.
Meanwhile, in a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg conducted a visit to the project site, followed by another visit to the Special Settlement Scheme (SPK) Jelutong project in Jepak, which is being implemented through a Sarawak government initiative under the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) to provide planned, comfortable, and affordable housing for the people.
The project involves the construction of 111 housing units, comprising 97 units under Stage 1 and 14 units under Stage 2, with the entire development now fcompleted.
In addition, the settlement is also equipped with essential infrastructure and amenities, including roads, a sewerage system, electricity supply, and water supply to ensure the well-being of the local community.
