Merdeka360 to bring lesser-known Malaysia history to wider audience, post-1963 generation urged to learn

KUCHING, Sept 14: Lesser-known historical accounts surrounding the formation of Malaysia will be made available through the Merdeka360 platform and other government channels to broaden public understanding of Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), particularly among younger generations.

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said Merdeka360, together with the Malaysian Information Department (Japen) and Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), would be used to disseminate historical content related to the formation of Malaysia.

“There are many stories and accounts that may not be widely known, and these can be shared through digital platforms to reach a wider audience,” he told reporters after launching the Malaysia Day 2026 exhibition at Plaza Merdeka here today.

Among the accounts to be made available is the identity of the person who carved the Malaysia Proclamation 1963, which Fahmi said he had asked the National Archives of Malaysia (ANM) to make available for publication.

Other historical information, including stories surrounding the national anthem Negaraku and the Jalur Gemilang, will also be shared through Japen’s official social media accounts and other government platforms.

At the same event, Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the initiative was particularly relevant to Malaysians born after 1963, who may be less familiar with the events that led to the country’s formation.

He urged younger Malaysians to learn about the historical process and follow the chronology of how Malaysia was formed to better appreciate the significance of Sept 16, 1963.

“Not many of us know how it was established, and that is why we go back to look at it, and then we can appreciate how this country of Malaysia was established,” he said.

Abdul Karim said the formation of Malaysia was a significant milestone that brought together Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore in 1963, with Singapore leaving the federation in 1965.

He said understanding the history of Malaysia’s formation was important in helping younger generations appreciate the significance of Malaysia Day.

The Malaysia Day 2026 exhibition, held at the Main Atrium of Plaza Merdeka from Sept 10 to 16, features historical material on the formation of Malaysia, as well as information on the proper use and etiquette of the Jalur Gemilang.

Mini exhibitions are also being held in Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Kapit, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang with additional exhibitions at the Ministry of Communications in Putrajaya and Sabah State Administrative Centre in Sabah. The Sabah exhibition will begin on Sept 15. — DayakDaily
