MIRI (April 25): The construction of a 500-megawatt (MW) combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant here has reached 45 per cent in progress, and is on track for full completion by the end of next year.

State Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi hailed the RM2 billion project, owned by Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros), as a key component of the Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR) in the northern hub of the state.

“The plant will play a crucial role in strengthening electricity supply stability in Sarawak while meeting rising energy demand, particularly from the industrial sector,” he said after a work visit to the project site on Friday.

Julaihi added that the project would also support the state’s transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.

The project was launched on Nov 30, 2024, by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Also present during the Friday visit were Deputy Minister of Utility (Sarawak Energy and Petros) Datuk Ibrahim Baki, the ministry’s permanent secretary Datu Jafri Lias, and Petros chief executive officer Dato Janin Girie.
