KUCHING (Aug 15): There is a need for more chefs to promote Sarawak through its cuisine, particularly at international events, to increase awareness about the region, said Datuk Sebastian Ting.
The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts said Sarawak cuisine is unique and a reflection of local cultures, and can boost the state’s global presence while contributing to economic growth.
“Sarawak food is different from most food you find in restaurants that serve Malaysian food overseas. The question here is how do we promote Sarawak food to the outside world?
“This is very important and perhaps it is time we consider making Sarawak food more accessible and recognised internationally,” he told reporters after attending the 2024 Sustainable Food International Conference at Waterfront Hotel, here yesterday.
Ting also emphasised the importance of strategic planning to ensure the success of promoting Sarawak cuisine, maintaining the state’s culinary heritage, and boosting its cultural footprint around the world.
“When people travel, one of the first things they do is find local food. Thus in that regard, we need to ensure that Sarawak cuisine becomes one of the sought-after experiences no matter where they are,” he said.
