New road proposed to ease Tupong traffic congestion

KUCHING (March 24): A new road linking Jalan Matang and Batu Kawa to the Emart roundabout has been proposed to help ease persistent traffic congestion in the Tupong area.

Chief Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier and Tupong assemblyman Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman said the proposed project is part of ongoing efforts to improve connectivity and address traffic bottlenecks in the constituency.

He noted that traffic congestion remains one of the main issues faced by residents, particularly along Jalan Matang, and stressed the need to diversify traffic flow rather than rely on a single main route.

“To resolve congestion, we need to disperse traffic and create alternative routes. Jalan Matang alone may not be able to fully address the issue,” he told reporters during his Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house at Dewan Hikmah on Tuesday.

Fazzrudin added that he has submitted an application for the project and will continue to follow up to ensure it is approved for the benefit of residents in the Tupong constituency.

He also emphasised that development in the area is an ongoing process guided by three key approaches—implementing new projects, monitoring existing ones, and upgrading older infrastructure.

“Every year, we continue to carry out development. What has yet to be done, we will initiate; what is already in place, we will monitor; and what is outdated, we will repair and improve,” he said.

The open house was also attended by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, Deputy Minister of Utility (Sarawak Energy and Petros) Datuk Ibrahim Baki, Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, as well as other dignitaries.
