SIBU (Dec 4): The installation of new streetlights from the Sungai Lebaan Bridge to the vicinity of SK Bawang Assan here has been completed, significantly improving night-time visibility along the route.
Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan branch chairman Councillor Kevin Lau said the project was funded under the Rural Development and Transformation Programme, a special allocation approved by the Premier.
“Today’s site visit focused on final discussions with the contractor and Sesco engineers to ensure each proposed streetlight location provides optimal lighting and meets the needs of road users,” he said.
He noted the upgrade enhances road safety for drivers and pedestrians and creates a safer environment for students commuting to and from school during early morning and late afternoon hours.
Together with engineers from the Sibu Rural District Council, a team from Sesco and the appointed contractor, Lau inspected the site and confirmed the final placements near SK Bawang Assan.
He said factors such as existing infrastructure, power connectivity and overall safety were carefully considered in determining the most suitable installation points.
The team also conducted an on-site assessment with relevant agencies to identify additional locations for future streetlight installations along the route.
