KUCHING, Dec 30: Various roads throughout the city centre will be temporarily closed to give way for the 2024 New Year Countdown celebration at Kuching Waterfront here tomorrow (Dec 31).
Kuching district deputy police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said the event is expected to commence from 8am tomorrow (Dec 31) to 1am the following day (Jan 1, 2024).
To facilitate the traffic flow, the police will set up road closures and diversions in Jalan Gambir, Jalan Lebuh Java and Jalan Gambir/Jalan Lebuh Java beginning 7am.
More road closures and diversions will start at 4pm involving Jalan Gambir, Jalan Lebuh Java, Jalan Gambir/Jalan Lebuh Java, Wayang Street/Main Bazaar Road, Main Bazaar/Temple Street (traffic light), Temple Street to Wayang Street, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg to Barrack Road, and Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg/Jalan Pearl to Jalan Wawasan.
“The general public who wish to attend the event are advised to not park their cars along the shoulder of the road.
“Public parking space is provided at Medan Pelita, Civic Centre, Sarawak Plaza, UTC building, Plaza Aurora and Reservoir Park,” he said in a statement today.

At the same time, Merbin said the Kuching District Police Headquarters will conduct a special crime prevention integrated operation throughout the celebration period while the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department will launch ‘Ops Mabuk’ to clamp down on drunk driving. — DayakDaily
