KUCHING: Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) serve as key players in fostering community development, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

He commended local NGOs for their pivotal role in bridging the gap between the government and the public.

The Batu Kawah assemblyman said these organisations enhance community welfare, safety, and development while also playing a crucial role in implementing government initiatives.

“Striking a balance between development and environmental sustainability is a daunting but unavoidable task.

“Sarawak is not exempt from the global challenges posed by climate change.

“Environmental protection efforts can begin with small steps in daily life, such as reducing waste, promoting community greening, and lowering energy consumption,” he said in a press statement following a handover ceremony for financial grants to local NGOs recently.

The ceremony awarded grants to 45 NGOs, including Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK), Chinese Primary School Boards of Management, Chinese Independent Secondary School Alumni Associations, as well as various churches and temples.

In his speech, Dr Sim encouraged NGOs to actively engage in supporting the government’s green technology and renewable energy projects.

He reiterated the Sarawak government is fully committed to driving development in the state.

“This effort requires the collective support and cooperation of the entire community to ensure that Sarawak remains the beloved home we cherish,” he added.
