KUCHING (Feb 21): For Nirvana Memorial Park (Kuching) Bhd, Chinese New Year carries meaning that extends beyond hopes of business success, centring instead on renewal, unity and respect for tradition.
Its executive director Siaw Chow Jin said the festive season serves as a reminder of shared values and togetherness, especially in the funeral service industry where reverence and ritual propriety guide daily operations.
The company hosted its annual Chinese New Year open house at its office here on Saturday, which brought together staffs, family members and business partners for a community banquet and lion dance performance.
“The New Year is about reunion and shared blessings. If the elderly, the underprivileged or anyone in need happens to join us, they are warmly welcomed. The spirit of Chinese New Year is inclusive and communal,” he told The Borneo Post.
Siaw added that beginning the year with reverence and positivity holds special meaning for a company that supports families during life’s most emotional moments.
“For us in the funeral service industry, we are even more mindful of tradition and ritual propriety. Respect for customs is part of our professional identity,” he said.
As part of tradition, Siaw said many businesses consult the Chinese almanac or “Tong Shu” to select an auspicious date and time to resume operations that symbolises alignment with heavenly timing and positive energy for the year ahead.
The open house also featured a lion dance performance, with the troupe moving through every corner of the office to symbolically dispel negative energy and usher in good fortune.
The “Cai Qing” ritual, or literally “plucking of the greens”, was carried out to signify the harvesting of wealth and prosperity. The greens were accompanied by a red envelope representing abundance.
The celebration concluded with company leaders distributing red packets to employees as a gesture of good luck, appreciation and shared prosperity.
Among those present were founder and managing director Anna Wong Nga Yang, general manager Siaw Khoi Nam and chief financial officer Siaw Sze Lin.
