SIBU (Feb 24): A 30-year-old lorry attendant was killed while two others were injured after a lorry laden with fertiliser rammed into the rear of a tanker lorry at Mile 12 Jalan Julau.

Sibu Zone 4 Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) chief Andy Alie said the department received a distress call at 12.04am.

“Following the emergency call, a team from the Bintangor fire station was immediately deployed to the location, about 32km from the station.

“Upon arrival, the size-up confirmed that a fertiliser-laden lorry had collided with the rear of a tanker lorry,” he said in a statement today.

He said two male attendants were found trapped in the cabin of the fertiliser lorry, while the injured driver managed to exit the vehicle on his own.

“Our firefighters carried out extrication works using specialised rescue equipment to remove both victims from the wreckage.

“The first victim, who was conscious, was then handed over to Health Ministry personnel for further medical assessment and action,” he said.

The second victim, identified as Stanly Ali, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene and handed over to the police for further action.

Andy advised motorists to exercise caution, especially during late-night and early-morning drives.

“We urge road users to remain vigilant and maintain a safe distance from heavy vehicles to prevent such unfortunate incidents,” he added.
