SIBU (Aug 10): Only about 1.76 per cent of teachers in Sarawak are able to master advanced technology.

This was highlighted by Sarawak Education Director Datu Dr Azhar Ahmad, who said the information was released by the Education Ministry (MoE) through the ‘Interpretation of Digital Integration in Education’ conducted on all teachers, school headmasters and principals, the district Education officers, and himself.

“This assessment began in its early stages in 2022. Out of the 360,000 teachers who participated, about 25 per cent were still at the basic level, while 74 per cent were at the intermediate level.

“Based on this data, the Department of Education will conduct training to enhance digital integration skills in education among the teachers,” he said in officiating at the 2023 Excellent Service Awards (APC) ceremony for Sibu District Education Office (PPD), at Kingwood hotel here yesterday.

Azhar also said that more digital-related programmes and training would be held to empower teachers in using technology and applying it in their syllabus.

“Technology is now a necessity when it comes to educating children.

“We cannot avoid the use of gadgets or technological advancements in the classroom because it is a necessity in today’s world.

“This is part of our development, and we must prepare ourselves with the knowledge and skills required, so as to perform our duties more effectively,” he added.

Meanwhile, Azhar congratulated all APC recipients and urged them to continue being motivated to further excel in their services in the future.

A total of 361 APC recipients received their awards yesterday.

Also in attendance was Sibu Education officer Ahli Chikba.
