KUCHING (July 19): Over 200 students and 50 teachers from Bintulu, Kanowit, Kuching, Limbang, Miri, Serian, Sibu, and Sri Aman are taking part in the 2nd Premier of Sarawak Debate Championship.
Organised by the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development in partnership with the state Education Department and Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, the three-day event, which ends today, is taking place at Swinburne Sarawak’s newly-redeveloped campus here.
“This tournament is a tribute to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his efforts to elevate the quality of education in Sarawak,” Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee said in a statement.
He said students should strive for excellence not only in their academic studies but also in co-curricular activities to ensure holistic development.
“Our ministry envisions creating outstanding young local talent who can contribute significantly to the state of Sarawak. It is essential for students to be articulate in both English and Bahasa Malaysia,” he said.
Swinburne Sarawak School for Design and Arts head Assoc Prof Hugh John Leong, who is chief adjudicator, said debating is a great avenue for students to hone their critical thinking skills and to read, research, and present different viewpoints.
“At Swinburne, we encourage students to think outside the box and gain skills, knowledge and experience that will prepare them for a tech-rich future,” he said.
This year’s debate covers a wide range of thought-provoking topics including Cultural Heritage, Economic Development, Education and Innovation, Healthcare and Well-being, as well as Sustainable Development.
The statement said the debate tournament is a landmark event in the region’s educational calendar, which features debates in English and Bahasa Malaysia.
It aims to bring together secondary school students from 17 districts across the state.
The event is designed to foster critical thinking, enhance public speaking skills, and promote intellectual discourse among young learners.
By providing a platform for students to articulate their ideas and engage in meaningful debate, the competition encourages the development of eloquence, confidence, and persuasive argumentation.
Participants are given the opportunity to showcase their linguistic prowess, contributing to their personal growth and academic excellence in a dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment.
