MIRI, Mar 7: A 49-year-old local man linked to a viral attempted theft at a supermarket in Miri has been nabbed by police while allegedly preparing to flee the district.
Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the suspect was detained by officers from the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) following investigations into the case.
“The Miri District Police Headquarters confirms that the Miri Criminal Investigation Division has successfully arrested a 49-year-old local man believed to be involved in an attempted theft at a supermarket in Miri City, where a video of the incident has recently gone viral on social media,” he said in a statement today.
According to him, police arrested the suspect at a Miri City petrol station while he was attempting to flee to another district.
The suspect is currently being held in custody, and a remand application will be made today at the Miri Court to facilitate further investigation under Section 380/511 of the Penal Code.
He said the case is being investigated by ASP Barry Bunyak of the Miri District Police Criminal Investigation Division.
Mohd Farhan emphasised that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) remain committed to tackling crime, especially theft, and urged the public to assist with information.
He urged the public to report any criminal activity to the police at 085-433400 or visit the nearest station to help maintain safety and order. — DayakDaily
