KUCHING, June 16: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has clarified that the presence of Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president Dato Sri Tiong King Sing in a Pakatan Harapan (PH) campaign event in Johor was entirely in his personal capacity with no connection to the coalition.
In a statement, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) information chief Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah also reiterated the coalition’s consistency in its political position of not interfering in election affairs in any other state.
“We only became aware of his presence at the campaign event in Johor after being informed of a report published by a news portal.
“His attendance at the campaign event was entirely in his personal capacity. His presence has no direct or indirect connection whatsoever with GPS.
“Any speculation linking GPS to the political campaign activities concerned is completely untrue,” he said.
PBB and PDP are component parties that form GPS alongside Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) and Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS).
This followed a report on Harapan Daily, which claimed that Tiong’s presence in the campaign event in Muar on Monday (June 15) had garnered attention amid the Johor state election campaign.
The report quoted Amanah Youth leadership committee member, Muammar Qaddafi, as saying that “the presence of a senior Borneo political leader on the PH campaign trail in Johor sends a strong signal for the upcoming GE16 (16th General Election)”.
“It is a signal when the big leaders of the Borneo party support the Pakatan Harapan campaign in Johor.
“And I believe that Tiong’s presence is not just a campaign in Johor.
“It is a sign of strengthening relations to face the upcoming GE16,” he said in a statement, as reported by Harapan Daily.
