KUCHING, July 2: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) and Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) are “best of friends” and “truly good partners” in Sarawak politics and governance, working closely together to develop the State and safeguard its interests within the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) framework, according to political pundit Dato Peter Minos.

Minos said the relationship between SUPP and PBB has undergone a major transformation since the 1960s, when Bumiputera communities were more cautious of the Chinese-based party.

Today, he said, the partnership has become strong, stable, and deeply cooperative.

“In the 1960s we the Bumiputeras had a rather suspicious attitude towards SUPP but now it is totally different: SUPP and PBB are best of friends. It cannot be any friendlier. Truly good partners in politics and in Sarawak government,” he said in a statement today.

He noted that since SUPP joined the Sarawak government in 1971, PBB has regarded the party as a loyal and dependable partner.

“Since SUPP teamed up with PBB in 1971 in the Sarawak government, PBB has regarded SUPP as a truly loyal political partner, fit to look after the Chinese community in Sarawak just as PBB oversees the Sarawak Bumiputera,” he said.

Over the decades, Minos pointed out that SUPP has steadily evolved into a reliable political force, strongly aligned with Sarawak’s development agenda and consistently supportive of GPS alongside other component parties such as Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).

Minos also highlighted the role of SUPP president Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, saying the party has become increasingly vocal in defending Sarawak’s rights and interests.

“Under its current leader, almost every day you hear SUPP fighting for Sarawak. This truly impresses PBB,” he said.

Minos further described SUPP as more than just a political party, calling it a “crusader” in mobilising the Sarawak Chinese community to work closely with Bumiputera communities in driving development and safeguarding Sarawak’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

At the same time, he cautioned that Sarawak continues to face external pressures from Peninsular-based political elements and national energy-related issues involving PETRONAS.

“As such, PBB, SUPP, PDP and PRS must remain united,” he said, stressing that continued cooperation within GPS is essential to ensure political stability, sustained development and protection of Sarawak’s rights. — DayakDaily
