KUCHING, June 19: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has agreed in principle to give incentives to schools in Sarawak that have established Environmental Lovers Clubs (‘Kelab Pencinta Alam Sekitar’ or PALS) under the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB).
Speaking at the NREB Service and Award Night 2026 at the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) Complex here tonight, he said that cleanliness and a sense of responsibility in caring for the environment should be instilled from a young age.
“We want our world to be clean, but that one is a question of culture. Once we have that cleanliness culture, then our country will be beautiful. Congratulations to the NREB for starting small from schools.
“Kelak kita rundinglah (We will negotiate later) incentives to schools that open environmental awareness clubs—we give a bit of incentive for them to fund their activities and inculcate that culture that we must look after our environment.
“Jack (Controller of Environmental Quality NREB Sarawak, Datu Jack Liam) did mention to me, I agree in principle. We will work out the amount,” he said in his speech which was broadcast live by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
Earlier on, Jack said that the PALS programme has expanded to 765 schools and is supported by the newly developed e-PALS system for club registration and grant tracking.
“This initiative supports NREB’s target of establishing PALS in all 1,460 schools in Sarawak by 2027,” said Jack.
Also present were Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian; Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Administration), Felicia Tan Ya Hua, representing the Sarawak Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki; Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment, Datuk Len Talif Salleh; Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni; and Sarawak State Attorney-General, Dato Sri Saferi Ali. — DayakDaily
