KUCHING, June 27: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has directed Sarawak Energy Berhad to replace ageing solar batteries supplied to communities in Kapit, saying the existing units are no longer able to provide reliable electricity.

He said although many rural areas have been equipped with solar power systems, the batteries have a limited lifespan and are becoming less effective over time.

“I have asked Sarawak Energy and Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi to replace all the batteries that we have provided in the Kapit area because they do not last.

“The batteries can only supply electricity for about three hours. It is not consistent,” he said when officiating the Sarawakku Sayang Programme in Kapit, broadcast live by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) on Facebook today.

Abang Johari further said battery technology is advancing rapidly, pointing to ongoing research in China to develop batteries capable of storing electricity for up to 12 hours.

He said such advancements, including Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) technology, could significantly improve the reliability of solar-powered electricity supply in rural areas.

“Today, China is carrying out research to produce batteries that can last up to 12 hours. If that becomes a reality, we will have batteries that can store electricity much longer,” he added.

Previously, Abang Johari had challenged researchers to develop solar power systems capable of supplying electricity for up to 12 hours without relying on conventional battery storage, as part of Sarawak’s broader push to strengthen renewable energy solutions for remote communities. — DayakDaily
