KUCHING, Dec 30: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will reveal the name of tallest flagpole in Malaysia and Southeast Asia and the square near the iconic Fort Margherita where the 99-metre structure stands, during its inauguration and countdown to New Year 2024 this Sunday (Dec 31).

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah emphasised that the structure is poised to become another iconic landmark in Kuching city.

“This project comprised not only the flagpole but also the surrounding landscape called a square (dataran).

“Visitors, especially tourists, both domestic and from abroad, can come and take photos and so on,” he told reporters after overseeing the full rehearsal for the New Year Countdown celebration at the Kuching Waterfront here last night (Dec 29).

Standing majestically near the iconic Fort Margherita and Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex, overlooking the Sarawak River with the Sarawak one-tonne flag flying high above, this new landmark symbolises the Sarawakian people’s sovereignty, pride, unity, patriotism, and aspirations.

With the entire Kuching Waterfront gearing up for the New Year countdown, Abdul Karim invites Sarawakians to come out and join this significant celebration and the opportunity to appreciate the nightscape of Kuching City along the Sarawak River, which will be beautifully illuminated.

“Let’s pray for favourable and good weather like these past two days,” he said.

Addressing the safety concerns in view of the spike in Covid-19 cases, Abdul Karim said the situation is under control and moreover, living with the virus has become a daily reality which people have adapted to.

However, he advised those in high-risk groups, especially senior citizens and those with comorbidities to wear masks, especially when participating in the forthcoming celebration.

This year’s countdown to New Year 2024 celebration will feature a string of activities and programmes including a concert featuring various artistes including Datuk Amy Search, Datuk Zainal Abidin, Hael Hussaini, Floor 88 and D’Fam.

Cultural showcases, performances by the Sarawak Symphony Orchestra (SONS) Junior, buskers, and a dazzling 10-minute musical fireworks display will culminate the countdown and herald the arrival of the new year. — DayakDaily
