KUCHING, Dec 16: While the world strives to achieve net zero carbon emission, Sarawak is actually ‘carbon negative’, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Abang Johari said when attending the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai last week, he had the opportunity to interact with the participants who discussed achieving a net-zero carbon target.

“I said Sarawak is (carbon) negative. We got more hydrogen and oxygen than carbon,” he said when attending the Convention Dinner of Our World Xu Clannish Association in Miri, streamed live via the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) Facebook page today.

He added that Sarawak is also carbon negative because the State still has many tropical rainforests, including utilisation of green power and a green economic approach.

“Sarawak is also very fortunate that it is 70 per cent powered by hydro and 30 per cent by gas,” he added.

On another note, Abang Johari opined that it is a loss for anyone who refuses to equip themselves with a commanding Mandarin language.

He said China is the second biggest economic power in the world, and anyone who can command both English and Mandarin would have a bigger market for them.

“The Chinese, if you talk about business, are number one.

“Once you can command the languages, you can bring modernity to your country,” he said. — DayakDaily
