A pro-Sabah gathering and an anti-graft protest were held simultaneously in Kota Kinabalu today and went off without incident.
The “Perhimpunan Aman Bangkit Sabahan 2.0” organised by Gerakan Kuasa Rakyat Malaysia was held in solidarity with the Sabah government and as a response to recent protest movements in the state, the Borneo Post reported.
Rally goers urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to reopen investigations into the alleged misappropriation of RM1.5 billion in Sabah rural development funds when Shafie Apdal was the federal minister of rural and regional development.
At the same time, the “Gempur Rasuah Sabah 3.0” rally, organised by a coalition of student activists and civil society groups, including Bersih, highlighted issues related to corruption, accountability and governance.
Protestors called for stronger action by the authorities over alleged corruption involving several Sabah assemblymen.
Although participants from the two rallies came into close proximity, police kept them apart. The two rallies ended at 5pm.
