KUCHING: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International) Prof Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit has been appointed as the university’s new Vice Chancellor.
The Higher Education Ministry (KPT) in a statement posted on its official Facebook wall recently said the letter of appointment was presented to Dr Ahmad Hata by KPT Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.
Dr Ahmad Hata takes over from Datuk Professor Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi and will serve for a period of three years effective from Jan 8, 2024 to Jan 7, 2027.
“His appointment is seen as continuing the agenda of making the university more accessible to the people as well as contributing to the development of Sarawak through strategic collaboration with the state and federal governments.
“KPT is also confident that Dr Ahmad Hata will enhance the status of UNIMAS as a comprehensive university based on three key areas, namely conservation of biodiversity and the environment; enhancement of information technology, communication and creativity; and sustainability of community transformation,” the ministry said.
Dr Ahmad Hata graduated with a Bachelor of Medical Science and a Doctor of Medicine from the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 2001.
He also has extensive experience in organisational administration and has held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at UNIMAS for seven years from 2012.
