MIRI: Assistant chef de mission (ACDM) for sailing Datuk Rosey Yunus has proposed the establishment of a dedicated sailing training centre in Pantai Bungai, Bekenu, to cultivate and enhance Sarawak’s young sailing talents.
During a site visit to Marina Jetty here, one of the venues for the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA), Rosey stressed the significance of the proposed centre.
“This is important because it can support the development of sailboat sports,” she said, highlighting the potential of Pantai Bungai’s beachfront as an ideal location for the centre.
Rosey further explained that with the support of the Sarawak government, the proposal for a sailing centre in Bekenu could become a reality.
“We need to set up the necessary facilities, including a hostel complex, to provide proper training and convenience for our athletes,” she added.
She stressed that the centre would not only serve as a training ground for Olympic-level aspirations but also ensure that Sarawak’s athletes have access to the right environment and resources to excel in the sport.
Accompanied by Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, the Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) and the SUKMA chef de mission (CDM), Rosey expressed confidence in Sarawak’s prospects.
“Inshallah, we are confident that we can secure medals,” she stated, noting the competitive spirit among the athletes across 14 sailing categories.
“We believe that this is the best time for us to shine and achieve success in sailing, not only for the athletes but for everyone involved, including staff and secretaries. This is important for the future of sailing in Sarawak,” she said.
