PRS broaches possibility of elections for party posts

KUCHING: As Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) prepares for its Triennial Delegates Conference (TDC) next year, the party remains focused on maintaining unity and advancing Sarawak’s interests, regardless of whether there will be open contests for party positions.

PRS Bukit Goram Division chairman Andy Lawrence, in response to a question about the possibility of an open contest at the upcoming TDC in February, said that it is observed that the party leadership may consider two possibilities – reaching a consensus on the top leadership positions or holding an open contest, depending on the situation.

“PRS has a long-standing tradition of holding open contests for all party positions.

“However, during the tenure of the late Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing, the position of party president remained uncontested due to his strong support and the absence of other nominations.

“Following the sudden passing of Masing, and during the last TDC, the party unanimously endorsed Datuk Joseph Salang as president, a decision made out of deep respect,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters at the ‘Warga Emas Sihat, Komuniti Sejahtera’ programme at Rh Wiliam Ubu, Antaroh, Kapit recently.

Andy said as the party’s approaches TDC next year, the party remains open to the possibility of contested elections for all positions, depending on the nominations received.

Also present at the programme was Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong.
