KUCHING, Nov 14: The Sarawak government has emphasised the greater importance of prioritising the welfare of its people and improving their living standards than to be concerned with the aftermath of war and conflict, which is thousands of miles away.
This was said by Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Youth Chief Datuk Snowdan Lawan, who supported Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi’s stand on not accepting Palestinian refugees into the State.
“Much so we choose to be humane, but our aids and assistance can be channelled in other forms through legitimate agencies such as Mercys’ International or the United Nations and so forth,” said the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts of Sarawak in a statement today.
On Nov 13, Nanta expressed his support of Sarawak Association for Peoples’ Aspiration (Sapa) publicity and information chief Peter John Jaban and several other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in their caution to the Sarawak government about the possibility of Palestinian refugees entering Sarawak.
Later on, the Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) secretary-general’s stand was also backed by Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen and Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) president Voon Lee Shan. — DayakDaily
