KUCHING, June 28: The Kuching Divisional Health Office has reminded the public to exercise extreme caution when handling animal carcasses, warning that rabies can be transmitted not only through bites but also through improper contact with infected remains.

In a Facebook post today, the Office said individuals who handle or bury carcasses of animals suspected or confirmed to be infected with rabies without proper protection may be exposed to saliva or nerve tissues containing the rabies virus.

As such, the public is strongly advised to avoid touching dead dogs or cats with bare hands and to immediately report any suspected rabies cases to the relevant authorities for safe handling and disposal.

RABIES ALERT: Do not handle animal carcasses with bare hands. Rabies can spread through infected tissues. Report suspected cases immediately.

Rabies remains a fatal disease once symptoms appear, with nearly 100 per cent mortality rate. However, it is also nearly 100 per cent preventable if prompt medical treatment is sought following exposure, the department stressed.

The advisory is part of ongoing public awareness efforts to curb rabies transmission in Sarawak, where authorities continue to urge responsible pet ownership and vigilance in handling animals. — DayakDaily
