“Setting up Sarawak’s own TV station was among the first few promises that I made when I took over from the late Pehin Sri Adenan… TVS no doubt will be a platform for our content creators, producers and performers to showcase their work. TVS is a dream come true for all Sarawakians (and it) will become the flagship of Sarawak’s endeavour to tap the potentials of the creative industry and ultimately to develop an economy centred on the creative industry.” Abang Johari (October 11, 2020)
ONE of the key areas that has seen significant growth under Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s leadership is the local media and communications sectors. Through his initiatives, he has sought to create more robust platforms for local news, culture, and government outreach, and to ensure that Sarawak’s voice resonates both within the State and beyond its borders.
Two notable initiatives that have emerged during his tenure are the establishment of Televisyen Sarawak (TVS) and the Unit Komunikasi Awam Sarawak (UKAS). These entities represent a strategic push towards empowering Sarawak’s media landscape, both through the establishment of a state-owned television station and a government communication unit. Both institutions are central to his vision of creating a more transparent, informed, and cohesive society, while also celebrating Sarawak’s unique identity.
TVS, Sarawak’s Very Own TV Station
TVS was officially launched in February 2020, marking a historic moment in Sarawak’s media landscape. It is a state-owned television channel that aims to provide an alternative platform for news and entertainment, serving the people of Sarawak with content that reflects their culture, languages, and regional interests. Before the establishment of TVS, Sarawak’s media scene, especially television, was heavily influenced by national media outlets. While these national channels serve their purpose in delivering important information and entertainment, they often lack the local nuance needed to truly resonate with Sarawak’s diverse communities.

The need for a localised television channel that speaks directly to the people of Sarawak was evident. Abang Johari recognised this gap and emphasised the importance of creating a media platform that would focus on local content, while also offering a tailored perspective on regional issues that would otherwise be overshadowed in national news. TVS was designed to provide Sarawakians with a media outlet that delivers relevant content, including news, entertainment, documentaries, and cultural programmes. The station is committed to offering a rich blend of traditional and modern content, celebrating the State’s diverse heritage while also addressing contemporary issues such as politics, economy, and education.
TVS produces a variety of content in several local languages, including Malay, English, Iban, Bidayuh, and Mandarin, ensuring that it caters to the broad spectrum of Sarawak’s ethnic communities. A significant aspect of TVS is its commitment to news coverage. The channel provides up-to-date news on local and national events, offering Sarawakians an independent and reliable source of information. It also serves as an important tool for the State government to disseminate information directly to the people, particularly with regard to policies, development projects, and government initiatives. TVS is also positioned as a platform to encourage dialogue and discussions on socio-political issues affecting Sarawak.

Championing local content and narratives is vital, especially for communities that have historically been underrepresented or marginalised in mainstream media. Beyond Sarawak’s shores, TVS extends its reach nationwide through various national television and digital streaming platforms, including its own. This not only allows the channel to promote Sarawak’s identity across Malaysia but also keeps Sarawakians living in other states or abroad connected and informed about developments back home.
UKAS, Sarawak’s Official News Wire
The Unit Komunikasi Awam Sarawak (UKAS), established under the Chief Minister’s Department, complements TVS by focusing on government communication. Its primary role is to ensure effective communication between the Sarawak government and the people, while also managing the circulation of information on government policies, programmes, and initiatives. UKAS was designed to enhance public understanding and awareness of Sarawak’s governance. One of its core functions is to provide timely and accurate information regarding the activities of the Sarawak government. It serves as an official mouthpiece, ensuring that all government messages are communicated clearly and consistently to the public. This proved vital during times of policy changes or crises, where public trust and understanding are needed.

With the rise of digital media, UKAS has adapted by expanding its presence on social media platforms, allowing it to reach a wider audience and engage with younger generations. The Unit regularly updates its social media channels with news, events, and initiatives from the Sarawak government, allowing for faster and more effective sharing of information and fostering a direct line of communication between the government and the people.
In addition to its role in government communications, UKAS engages with the public in meaningful ways. It provides a platform for feedback and suggestions from citizens, which is essential in ensuring that the government’s policies and decisions are aligned with the needs and aspirations of the people.

Together, TVS and UKAS form a powerful combination in terms of media and communication in Sarawak. TVS offers a platform for entertainment, cultural expression, and news, while UKAS ensures that the people of Sarawak are kept informed about government policies, programmes, and initiatives. Both institutions work hand in hand to create a more informed and engaged citizenry, one that is aware of its rights, responsibilities, and the opportunities available to it. Abang Johari’s initiatives in the media sector, including the establishment of TVS and UKAS, are an essential part of his broader vision for a modern, transparent, and inclusive Sarawak. These entities have already made an impact, both culturally and politically, by providing the people of Sarawak with more localised and relevant content, while also fostering greater public engagement and government transparency.
With an increasing reliance on digital platforms and the rise of social media, the future of TVS and UKAS will depend on their ability to innovate and adapt to the rapidly changing media environment. As Sarawak continues to grow and evolve, these media entities will likely play even more significant roles in shaping the State’s media and communication landscape.
