KUALA LUMPUR (September 22): Shanghai Electric has launched its Southeast Asia regional headquarters at Plaza Conlay in Kuala Lumpur, marking a new phase in the company’s regional expansion across Southeast Asia and Oceania.
The launch ceremony on Sept 21 comes shortly after the company secured a major order in Malaysia for the Samalaju combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) Unit 3 project in Sarawak, marking an important breakthrough for its gas turbine solutions in overseas markets.
The regional headquarters will cover 13 countries across Southeast Asia and Oceania and serve as a platform for regional coordination, services and ecosystem cooperation.
According to Shanghai Electric, the headquarters will draw on the company’s subsidiaries and representative offices across the region to integrate its capabilities in energy equipment, green and intelligent industries, and support more efficient resource allocation and localised operations.
The company has been operating in Southeast Asia for more than two decades, with projects spanning power plants, solar power, wind power, power transmission and distribution, as well as urban industrial complexes.
In Malaysia, Shanghai Electric recently secured the Samalaju CCGT Unit 3 project, located at the Samalaju Industrial Park in Sarawak and developed by Sarawak Energy.
The project will involve the construction of a 500MW class gas and steam combined cycle power generation unit using advanced combined cycle technology to strengthen regional electricity supply and improve energy efficiency.
As a core equipment supplier for the project, Shanghai Electric will provide major equipment including gas turbines, steam turbines, generators, heat recovery steam generators and air cooled systems.
It will also provide an integrated solution covering engineering design, procurement, construction, commissioning and related technical services.
The heavy duty gas turbine serving as the core power equipment will be manufactured by Shanghai Electric.
The company said the project demonstrates its capabilities in heavy duty gas turbine manufacturing and full lifecycle services, covering the process from individual equipment manufacturing to long term service agreements.
Shanghai Electric said Malaysia is a mature and highly competitive gas turbine market with high entry barriers.
Against a backdrop of tight global supply of heavy duty gas turbines, the project marks an overseas breakthrough for domestically produced high power gas turbines and represents progress for China’s heavy duty gas turbine technology in international commercial competition.
Shanghai Electric said it would use the Southeast Asia regional headquarters as a platform to better align its technological capabilities with regional development needs.
The company also aims to support Southeast Asia’s energy transition and economic development through advanced equipment and full lifecycle services.
