Minimal damage caused by a fire at the area storing old materials in Rh Manggat, Spaoh on Jan 10, 2024.

BETONG, Jan 10: Residents’ quick action and having fire extinguishers readily available prevented the two-storey, 19-door Rh Manggat near Sungai Pelandok Paku in Spaoh from being engulfed in flames.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak swiftly responded to the emergency at 3.10pm today (Jan 10) by mobilising a team of firefighters from Betong Station to the location.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the fire had only affected stored goods in the walkway area near the washroom, next to the kitchen of the longhouse, resulting in a minimal five per cent damage.

Two residents of Rh Manggat managed to quickly prevent the fire from spreading on Jan 10, 2024.

The fire did not spread to the main structure of the building.

Residents, 33-year-old Justin Empaga Burai and 51-year-old Langi Edward Kaya, successfully extinguished the fire using two fire extinguishers before the firefighters arrived.

No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.

Firefighters conducted a safety check at the longhouse to ensure no potential sources of ignition remained. The operation ended at 4.10pm. — DayakDaily
