KUCHING, June 30: The RM138.9 million upgrading project for the Batu Kitang Water Treatment Plant, which will double treated water production capacity from 100 million litres per day (MLD) to 200 MLD and significantly strengthen the water supply system for the Kuching Division, Samarahan Division, and surrounding areas, is scheduled for completion by the end of this year.

Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi said the project is a key initiative by the Sarawak government to enhance water supply resilience and meet growing demand in rapidly developing areas across the region.

“The project has reached about 67 per cent physical completion.

“Once completed, the upgraded facility is expected to not only improve supply reliability in Kuching, but also benefit parts of Samarahan such as Sungai Mata and Tanjung Parang, including areas served under the rural water distribution system managed by the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB),” he said in a press release today.

He highlighted this following a working visit to the Batu Kitang Water Treatment Plant (Module 7) upgrading works today, where he reviewed the current progress and ongoing construction activities.

Julaihi emphasised that the project is also expected to help address recurring low water pressure issues in fast-growing areas such as Stakan and Samarindah, where demand for treated water has been rising steadily.

The scope of works includes upgrading key treatment processes such as flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, chemical dosing systems, and the SCADA automation system.

It also involves the construction of a new treated water storage tank, treated water pumping station, improved power supply facilities, and enhancements to the raw water intake system at the Sarawak River.

During the visit, Julaihi was briefed on the project’s progress and implementation schedule to ensure timely completion.
The Sarawak government reiterated its commitment to accelerating strategic utility infrastructure projects to ensure continuous, safe, and high-quality water supply, in line with the state’s long-term development and utility transformation agenda.
