KUCHING, June 17: Several key roads in the city centre will be temporarily closed on June 19 and 20 in conjunction with the ‘Niti Daun’ programme for the Sarawak-Level Gawai celebration 2026, which will be held at Kuching Waterfront.

Kuching District Police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said that the closures are necessary to ensure smooth traffic flow and the safe conduct of both the rehearsal and main event.

According to a statement today, the affected roads will be closed in stages on June 19 from 12pm to 6pm during the rehearsal, and again on June 20 from 10am to 6pm for the main programme.

Among the roads involved are Lebuh Java, Market Road, Gambier Road, Old Court House Road, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, Carpenter Street, Lebuh Wayang, Main Bazaar, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Chan Chin Ann, Jalan Abell and surrounding access routes including slip roads near the White Cat statue and Sri Aman roundabout.

Police also advised motorists to avoid parking along roadside shoulders in the affected areas and to plan their journeys early by using alternative routes to minimise congestion.
