KUCHING, May 13: Several major roads leading into Padang Merdeka will be closed this weekend (May 16–17) from 7pm to midnight in conjunction with the Kuching Music Festival 2026, as authorities move to ensure smooth traffic flow and public safety during the large-scale event.

Kuching District Police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the temporary closures and traffic diversions will affect key routes in the city centre surrounding Padang Merdeka, where the festival will be held over two nights.

Among the affected routes are the RTM slip road and traffic light junction, Pearl Road traffic light junction, Wawasan Road junction from Lebuh Wayang, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg towards Jalan Barrack, Jalan Barrack towards Jalan Pearl, and Jalan Gambier towards Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg.

The Kuching Music Festival 2026 will take place at Padang Merdeka from 7pm to 12 midnight on May 16 and 17, featuring live performances and cultural showcases expected to draw significant crowds.

The police has urged the public to avoid parking along road shoulders near the event area and to plan their journeys early. Road users are also advised to use alternative routes to reduce congestion in the city centre.
