Anthony Loke announces resignation as Transport Minister following Najib’s conditional pardon

KUCHING: DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke has offered to resign as transport minister following the decision allowing former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.

Loke said today (Sept 19) that he would submit his resignation letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim soon, following an almost three-hour meeting of DAP’s Central Executive Committee (CEC).

“My resignation as transport minister reflects DAP’s position. I will submit the letter to the prime minister soon,” he said.

Loke said the Transport Ministry would continue to function normally despite his decision, adding that he would first discuss outstanding matters with Anwar to ensure an orderly transition.

“Ministers come and go, the ministry will function as usual. I will need some time because there is some outstanding work, and I will discuss this with the prime minister.

“Projects that are already ongoing will continue because the ministry will not stop functioning,” he said.

The decision applies only to Loke, with DAP’s other ministers and deputy ministers remaining in the Unity Government.

The CEC said the party would maintain its participation in the government, citing the need to preserve political stability and the administration’s parliamentary majority.
