KUCHING, July 4: Sarawak’s digital economy transformation has progressed significantly since its introduction in 2017 with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg pointing to recent developments as evidence of the State’s long-term strategic direction.
Speaking at the launch of the Miri Smart City Command Center today, Abang Johari reflected on the early rollout of the digital economy initiative, which he said was initially met with skepticism.
“When I took over from the late Tok Nan, I introduced the Digital Economy. Many people asked what it meant, especially when basic infrastructure was still being developed,” he said.
He noted that Sarawak opted to advance digital development in tandem with basic infrastructure improvements rather than sequencing one after the other.
Since then, the strategy has materialised through several initiatives, including AI-enabled systems in Miri, the expansion of Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) and wider uptake of S Pay Global in rural communities.
He said the progress reflects Sarawak’s broader shift towards a digital-driven economy, supported by increasing public adoption and participation.
“Today, our people are adapting, our economy is transforming and we are moving in the right direction,” he said.
He added that these developments reaffirm the State’s commitment to building a technology-based economy for the long term. — DayakDaily
