SIBU, Jan 19: Sarawak is ready for Sukma 2024 as most divisions have gained valuable experience from organising the recently concluded Sukan Sarawak (Suksar) 2024.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, in his speech read by Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Hamzah, said the preparations for organising Sukma are being actively implemented, including preparing the State’s athletes.

“Thorough preparation of the Sarawak contingent is important because it will have a significant impact on the performance, capability, and success of all athletes,” he said at the closing ceremony of Suksar 2024 on Jan 18.

Sarawak will play host to Sukma 2024 from August 17 to 24, where 37 sporting events scheduled to take place will be held in different divisions in the State.

Abdul Karim believed by doing that, Sarawakians from all over the State would be able to come together to give their support to the State teams to win.

“Sukma events will take place in Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Serian, Betong, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, and Miri divisions,” he said.

He said though the State’s athletes might be unknown, they could outshine their more illustrious counterparts from other states with support from the people.

“Athletes from other states might be seeded first, second, and third, and we might not be that good yet, but a lot of miracles can happen if our athletes are given the right support,” he said.

With events taking place Statewide, he wants the respective divisional Residents to ensure that the Sukma events are organised properly.

Meanwhile, Suksar 2024 saw the Southern Zone emerging as champion with 63 gold, 43 silver, and 37 bronze (medals).

Second was the Central Zone with 50 gold, 47 silver, and 54 bronze, and third went to the Northern Zone with 49 gold, 56 silver, and 59 bronze. — DayakDaily
