KOTA SAMARAHAN, Sept 26: A sea of 819 runners turned up at Taman Tasik Desa Ilmu (TTDI) here today to mark the 40th anniversary of the Samarahan Division, with 409 men and 410 women joining the 4-kilometre (km) Fun Run.

Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Rubiah Wang said the encouraging turnout showed that recreational activities could be an effective way to promote a healthy lifestyle among the community.

“Congratulations and well done to all participants who have been involved since early this morning in our efforts to ensure that one of the healthy lifestyle programmes can be incorporated into our daily lives,” she said in her speech, according to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) today.

Rubiah, who is also Kota Samarahan MP, expressed her appreciation to the Samarahan Resident’s Office, Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency (IRSDA), Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) and all parties involved in making the programme a success.

The event began with an aerobics and warm-up session, followed by a safety briefing by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

Rubiah flagged off the 4km Fun Run at 7am before joining guests of honour and heads of departments for a brisk walk around TTDI.

Also present were Samarahan Deputy Resident Rais Ahmat, Samarahan District Officer Ahmad Abdul Razak, MPKS chairman Abang Ismawi Abang Ali, and Kota Samarahan District Police Chief Superintendent Mohd Irwan Hafiz Mohd Radzi. — DayakDaily
