KUCHING, May 7: The Certificate of Recognition for the Sarawak Delta UNESCO Global Geopark was officially presented to Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during a brief ceremony at Satria Pertiwi Complex today.
According to Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), the certificate was handed over by Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development II, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who also serves as adviser to the Sarawak Delta UGGp.
Among those present were Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, members of the Sarawak Cabinet, as well as Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.
The Certificate of Recognition for the Sarawak Delta UNESCO Global Geopark.A geopark is an area recognised for geological sites and landscapes of international or national significance, managed through a holistic approach centred on conservation, education, and sustainable development.
Spanning approximately 3,112 square kilometres, the Sarawak Delta UNESCO Global Geopark features distinctive geological formations, rich biodiversity including orangutan habitats, and the cultural heritage of indigenous communities, all of which hold strong potential for tourism development.
The recognition marks a historic achievement for Sarawak following 17 years of sustained efforts by multiple stakeholders led by the Sarawak Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development to secure the prestigious international status.
It also strengthens Sarawak’s standing on the global stage in the conservation of natural heritage and cultural treasures.
Previously, a Sarawak Delta delegation led by Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment, Datuk Len Talif Salleh, received the recognition certificate from UNESCO in Paris on April 27, 2026. — DayakDaily
