BINTULU (Aug 20): The Sarawak muaythai contingent today has emerged as the overall champion in the just-concluded event at the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2024.
The team amassed an impressive haul of five gold medals, four silvers, and one bronze.
Close on their heels, the Sabah muaythai contingent showcased their prowess, securing the second spot with an equally commendable tally of five golds, three silvers, and two bronzes.
Perak’s muaythai team also made a significant mark, clinching third place with four golds, one silver, and one bronze.
In the combat finals today (Aug 20), three out of five Sarawak fighters who qualified for the finals won in their respective categories.
Sarawak’s Mauriene Hii Sie Lin won the third gold medal for Sarawak muaythai team after defeating Nur Faqina Dullia Aderea Zaratul Ihram from Kelantan 17-4 in the 48-51kg category.
Sarawak’s sensational muaythai fighter, Muhammad Mikail Ghazali Zulfikar, affectionately known as ‘Miki,’ clinched another gold medal for Sarawak team.
He defeated Muhammad Zulfakar Othman from Melaka 21-14 in the 51-54kg category.
Another young muaythai star in the making, Texas Jeremy Lo clinched the fifth gold in the 54-57kg final bout against Muhamad Hakimi Nordin from Penang.
Cherilynn Christalle Qi Q Chan and Azhad Haziq Syafaat Abdul Khalid who were defeated in the finals, settling for a well-deserved silver medal.
On Monday, the Sarawak Muaythai team secured two gold medals in the men’s wai kru solo and men’s mai muay duo events.
The women’s team also contributed to the medal tally by winning two silver medals in the same categories and also a bronze in the semifinal.
