SIBU (Feb 28): The Sarawak Museum Department has taken follow-up action on the viral issue concerning Batu Tanam Demong in Ulu Krian, Saratok, by engaging with the local community to provide clarification.
In a statement, the department’s Corporate Communications Section said the move followed a report published on Feb 22, 2026, which drew public attention to the historic monument.
The department noted that Batu Tanam Demong was officially gazetted on March 21, 2022, under the Sarawak Heritage Ordinance 2019 as a protected heritage site.
“In this regard, we have reached out to the social media account involved to provide further clarification regarding the issues,” the department said.
A meeting was subsequently held on Feb 26 with the Tuai Rumah and the Ulu Krian community in Saratok to address any misunderstandings and ensure accurate information was conveyed to local residents.
The department emphasised that it valued public concern over the preservation and conservation of Sarawak’s heritage.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all information disseminated to the public is accurate and verified.
The statement added that efforts to strengthen fact-checking and coordination processes would continue to be enhanced to prevent similar issues in the future.
