The government will give greater focus to Penang and Sarawak in its efforts to improve Malaysia’s low birth rate, said Nancy Shukri, the minister for women, family and community development.
In-vitro fertilisation would be among the measures taken to help couples who face difficulties in conceiving, with the ministry placing greater emphasis on fertility-related programmes next year, Borneo Post reported.
“Fertility programmes are important because our population is still low and we want to increase it. So we have also proposed programmes related to fertility.
“Sarawak and Penang are among the states that need to be given focus because we want to increase the birth rate,” she told reporters after launching a women’s leadership event in Kuching, Sarawak.
She noted that while fertility programmes were already in place, the ministry intended to place greater emphasis on them next year as part of efforts to encourage more young people to have children. Proposals for fertility-related programmes had been included in the ministry’s budget submission.
She added that studies on fertility rates had also been conducted to support efforts to formulate measures to increase birth rates in Malaysia.
