KUCHING, July 2: The 23rd Sarawak Premier Cup – International Junior Golf Championship is set to gather around 100 amateur junior golfers from 10 countries at the Eastwood Valley Golf Course in Miri, taking place from July 13 to 17.
The trophy presentation ceremony to the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, was held at the Satria Pertiwi Complex today, according to Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) News.
The delegation was led by Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, accompanied by his deputy Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu and Sarawak Golf Association chairman Hoan Kee Hock.
At a press conference, Gerald said the prestigious championship will feature top amateur junior golfers from Indonesia, China, Bangladesh, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia and Singapore.
“The event will see participation from 10 countries, involving approximately 100 players, all of whom are amateur juniors rather than professionals,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Hoan said that the tournament will be contested across four age categories, ranging from eight to 16 years old, with each country sending its best-selected players.
He added that the championship is recognised under the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) Junior system, enabling participants to earn valuable ranking points that contribute to their international standing.
“These ranking points are crucial as they help improve players’ global rankings and open doors to more elite tournaments, some of which only invite those ranked within the world’s top 100 or 300,” he said. — DayakDaily
