KUCHING: The value of Sarawak's Future Sovereign Wealth Fund increased to RM8.6 billion this year from the initial allocation of RM8 billion, reflecting the state government's efforts to build financial wealth for the benefit of future generations.

Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the fund was created as part of the state government's long-term responsibility to ensure that Sarawak's revenues and resources continue to generate value in the future.

He said the fund was set up with an initial allocation of RM8 billion and aims to protect and develop Sarawak's financial wealth through disciplined investment, professional management and strong governance.

"Sarawak Sovereign Wealth Future Fund is a real long-term responsibility, where we transfer surplus value of electricity and energy that is being exported or will be exported to ASEAN countries and beyond.

"The fund is now starting to build a diversified investment portfolio, including global fixed income assets and domestic bonds", he said at the Sarawak Corporate Leadership Summit 2026 here today.

Johari said the fund was also accepted as an Associate Member of the International Forum of Sovereign Wealth Funds, thus strengthening its position in sovereign wealth fund management internationally.

He said the fund was protected from any withdrawal for 20 years, including by any subsequent governments, under statutory provisions.

"This fund cannot be touched for 20 years and any subsequent ruling government can also, by law, not touch the fund during that period.

"So, we will continue to expand this fund and I hope it can be like Norway's sovereign wealth fund in the East", he said.

Meanwhile, Brother Johari said Sarawak's financial strength gives more room for the state government to continue investing in infrastructure, education, technology and economic activities.

He said that each investment should be assessed on the basis of the long-term value it can create, including improving connectivity, developing new industries, strengthening human capital and enhancing economic resilience.

"The ultimate goal is to use the resources and financial strength we have today to build a capacity that will continue to create value in the future.

"Development is not only spending more or building more infrastructure, but ensuring every investment decision is made wisely and the benefits continue to be enjoyed by Sarawak people for the long term", he said.
