KUCHING, June 13: Sarawak’s Head of State (TYT) Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku has been appointed as the second chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS).
According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report today, UTS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Ab Hamid announced the appointment after paying a courtesy visit to Wan Junaidi at Astana Negeri Sarawak today.
Khairuddin stated that Wan Junaidi’s appointment took effect on June 12 of this year for a five-year term.
“Today, we are honoured to pay a courtesy visit to Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi and hand over the appointment certificate as the second chancellor of UTS,” he was quoted as saying.
The UTS Board of Directors chairman and top management were also in attendance.
Khairuddin added that since its inception in April 2013, UTS has produced over 4,000 graduates, and the number of student intakes has tripled each year as a result of the Sarawak government’s incentives and assistance for Bumi Kenyalang (Land of the Hornbill) students.
On the same note, UTS has opened a new campus in Mukah known as the Laila Taib Campus, which will serve as a catalyst for Sarawak’s maritime industry.
According to Sarawak Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development (MEITD), Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, the campus will receive its first student intake this year.
“Actually, we have a new campus in Mukah which is the Laila Taib UTS Campus.
“The campus will focus on the maritime department, and starting this year, we will receive the first students to begin the course there,” he noted.
Ukas reported that Dr Annuar made the remarks following the courtesy visit to Wan Junaidi.
Following this, Wan Junaidi also received a courtesy visit from the Consul General of Brunei Darussalam, Sheikh Abdul Mahdani Dato Paduka Sheikh Abdul Gani, and his delegation. — DayakDaily
