KUCHING (Sept 14): The Sarawak swim team made an impressive start on the opening day of the Majlis Sukan Sekolah Malaysia (MSSM) 2024 at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil, securing the top position with a total of seven gold, four silver, and four bronze medals.
Kuala Lumpur followed in second place, earning five gold, two silver, and two bronze medals. Selangor took third place with four gold, seven silver, and five bronze medals.
A standout performance came from 12-year-old Sheamus Chew Heng Yi, who set a new record in the 100m Backstroke with a time of 1:07.07, surpassing the previous record of 1:07.33 set by Ian James Barr in 2007.
Sheamus also claimed gold in the 50m Butterfly with another record-breaking time of 27.40 seconds, beating Damien Seth Lim’s 2023 record of 28.74 seconds.
In the same 100m Backstroke event, 12-year-old Liysha Liung Chen Celestine Baru won gold in the girls’ 12 and under category.
For the 15 and under girls’ category, 14-year-old Shanise Jauwa Joseline Adong earned bronze.
In the boys’ 15 and under category, 15-year-old Dylan Leong Yi Quan took gold, while fellow Sarawakian Cayden Mineve Chin finished in fourth place.
Christy Wong Yao Xuan also secured bronze in the 100m Backstroke for the girls 18 and under category.
In the 50m Butterfly, Elisha Lee won bronze in the 12 and under girls’ category.
Dylan Leong achieved silver in the same event for 15 and under boys.
In the 200m Freestyle, Sheamus set another new record with a time of 2:11.21, breaking the old record of 2:11.92 held by Daniel William Henry Bego since 2001.
In the girls’ 12 and under category, Elisha won silver, and fellow Sarawakian Lisha ranked fourth.
Chereen Ngo Yirui won silver in the 15 and under girls’ category, while Ryan Colby Kueh Poh Yuan secured gold in the boys’ 15 and under category.
In the 50m Breaststroke, Louis Tie Xun Rui earned silver in the 12 and under boys’ category, with fellow Sarawakian Max Chew Yu Xiang finishing fourth.
Seau Zhi Ping contributed a bronze in the 15 and under boys’ category.
The MSSM 2024 Aquatic events are taking place at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil from 13th to 20th September.
